  Why does a forty-something lawyer unexpectedly dive into a pool in her underwear at a legal conference? Was it a sort of career suicide? Thanks to Mike Mavilia Rochester and the other editorial baristas at The Fictional Café for publishing my short story “In the Hotel Room with Arles.” .

I am honored that my short story, "What I Call Life" will be forthcoming in Rosebud  literary magazine's 25th Anniversary issue #65. I am a subscriber now but have also purchased it many times at Barnes and Noble stores around the US. It's the fifth of my my group of linked stories to be published and especially meaningful to have it published in magazine I've long admired. Many thanks to editor Roderick Clark.

The May 2018 issue of  Mistake House  is out and  it’s very exciting to see my short-story The 2013 Holiday Letter and my poem Conversation Overheard at the Upscale Market included. The issue features poet Rajiv Mohabir and a cover by and interview with artist Rudy Shepherd.  

One of the pleasures of literature is discovering new writers that dazzle and inspire. Writers like Kristiana Kahakauwila , whom I  encountered first in Mistake House , the literary journal of Principia College.  This is Paradise, Kahakauwila's remarkable debut story collection, takes us deep into the lives of a diverse group of  Hawaiians.     Here’s a wonderful interview   that the journal did with this author to remember.  I'm also very pleased to have a short-story and a poem forthcoming in the next Mistake House .

As I contemplated applying to grad school again, I realized that the hardest part of the process might be getting letters of recommendation for my creative work. But I would like to thank two people who vouched for me.  Jacob  Silkstone, managing editor at the U.K. and Pakistan based international journal The Missing Slate , vouched for me by way of  the pieces  I'd published there. I also reached out to a professional writing contact, Judge JoAnne Kloppenberg, now  the presiding judge of the  Wisconsin Court of Appeals . I was lucky enough to have Jo Anne represent many of my decisions in the  environmental protection unit of the Department of Justice. She vouched for my quasi-judicial decisions and lawyerly writing. With their help, I was accepted into the  MFA program  in fiction at Augsburg College in Minneapolis.  Thanks to both for your support, and more on Augsburg in a later post.

Nice Minnesota Public Radio story about the  Lake Superior poetry anthology  launch and reading in Duluth this weekend. It was a pleasure to meet Jim Pearlman, the other anthology editors and to meet and hear so many fine poets and artists who, like me, love the sweet water sea. Another highlight was the lyrical and inspired singing of Sara Thomsen .You can buy the anthology here .

Here's an article by attorney Christa Westerberg about some of my recent decisions in my day job as an administrative law judge, Groundwater: Diminishing Resource, Increasing Conflict . It was the cover story in this month's Wisconsin Lawyer.

My poem The North , intended as a response to  Jorge Luis Borges’  The South   (El Sur), has been accepted into a book that’s coming out this summer—called Amethyst and Agate: Poems of Lake Superior   to be published by   Holy Cow! Press . It was first published in The MacGuffin in 1990.

Just received the galleys for My Once-Favorite Cousin, my short-story that will soon be published in the Fall 2014 issue of The MacGuffin.  It's the third story from my Blue Lake collection of stories to have been published this year, and the second to appear in The MacGuffin. Many thanks to editor  Prof. Steven A. Dolgin and managing editor Gordon Krupsky for their support of my work, and to their magazine for publishing my poetry and stories over the past three decades.

Looking forward to getting the latest edition of Agave,   the elegant international journal that has been kind enough to take a second poem, The Sort of Fleeting Afterglow.

My piece about the Driftless Area, has been selected as  Poem of the Week.  I'm very excited to have a third excerpt from my novel The Mysterious Grace Clarkson published at The Missing Slate.  Also thrilled to have it paired with the beautiful artwork of  Fraz Mateen.

I'm very pleased to have my short story "Nadine and Frederick" accepted for the latest issue of  The MacGuffin.   This is my fourth short story in its pages, and they've also published many of my poems--the first in 1986. No literary magazine has supported my work more consistently, and I am very grateful.

Glad the discerning metropolitans at the The Missing Slate  made this their weekend poem. It's a truly international journal led by a talented and culturally diverse team with roots in Pakistan, South Asia and the UK.
